SOS Children's Villages: a loving home, family and hope for the future for the children in need

SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE – is a family-based model that provides a family approach to the long-term care of orphaned, abandoned children or those whose families are unable to care for them. We try to provide children with what they were deprived of, what is necessary for their physical and spiritual development: mother, siblings, home and confidence in future.

SOS Childrens Villages is 10 to 15 family houses where children of different ages live with their foster SOS-mothers. Each SOS-mother takes care of 6 to 8 children as any other mother does: she keeps house, cooks, helps the kids with their everyday life and teaches them everything that they will need in their future independent life. Unlike children from state orphanges who live in a closed system and hardly communicate with the world around them children from SOS Childrens Villages are integrated into the community. They have friends, attend normal schools, get additional education and have all the opportunities to fulfill their needs and aspirations.

First Russian SOS Childrens Village was built near Moscow in Tomilino in 1996. In 2011 this SOS Village celebrated its 15th anniversary. 62 kids graduated from SOS Childrens Villages Tomilino during these years. Most of them got a proper education and now live independently. Third of them already have their own families and kids.

So far there are 5 SOS Childrens Villages in Russia: in Tomilino, in Lavrovo (Oryol region), in Pushkin (near Saint-Petersburg), in Kandalaksha (Murmansk region), in Pskov. 6th SOS Childrens Village in Vologda is due to open its doors to new kids in 2011.
